My Values
Local economic growth:
Our economy is owned by billionaires and corporations. As a result, locally-owned businesses are squeezed out and workers’ rights are violated. I will advocate for policies to improve the profitability of locally-owned businesses and farms, and ensure livable wages and good conditions for workers across the board.
Good public services:
I will advocate for strong oversight of state contracts through an Office of Inspector General to eliminate fraud in Minnesota.
I will advocate for direct funding to the public schools in District 28B to improve education without increasing our property taxes. I will always support our public schools to offer exceptional education to our students.
I will fight to institute universal healthcare in Minnesota, reducing costs and eliminating co-pays and fees for care. This would drastically reduce healthcare costs, one of the most expensive items in every family's budget.
3. Protecting the environment:
Conservation and recreation are at the heart of our district, and they are also the key to a healthy mind, body, spirit, and economy.
ABOUT DANIEL COLTEN SCHMIDT
I grew up in St. Louis, Missouri, and have lived in both rural and urban communities all across the country. I graduated from Hampshire College in 2022 with a BA in Economics and Natural Philosophy. As part of my thesis, I studied both the economic history of the 20th century and the effect of environmental factors on water quality.
My studies led me to my first job in Minnesota as a canoe guide. I then worked as an AmeriCorps member with the Minneapolis Health Department where I facilitated solar education programs. I also served on the Minneapolis Green Zone Council where I advocated for economic growth and public health. Over the last 3 years, I served as Finance & Development Director of the East Phillips Neighborhood Institute, an economic development nonprofit focused on community-led re-industrialization of a redlined community. In my role, I raised over $12 million from sources including state appropriations and agencies. Under my leadership we grew a team of eight full time employees with good benefits.
As your Representative, I will guide investments directly into our community to support exceptional public schools, affordable healthcare, and a strengthened local economy.
