70 Days Till Election
Today marks 70 days until the election on November 3. This election will define what we can expect over the next two years. Will we permanently protect the Boundary Waters? Will we provide disaster and economic relief for communities across the state? Will life become more affordable?
Chisago County is important in statewide politics, and we can influence these questions. We can balance our budget while also providing strong social programs. We can improve our local economies while protecting critical resources. Local leadership matters, and I'm committed to good governance.
Out in the community
Over the last two weeks, I attended lots of events I would like to share with you:
American Cancer Society's Relay for Life
This was a heart-filled event at the Chisago Lake Lutheran Church. Two survivors of cancer, Eric Stromberg and Annie Willem, told their stories. Eric encouraged everyone in the audience not to push off regular check ups with their doctors, and Annie told us to "Advocate for yourself! If you think there's something wrong, speak up to your doctors."
During the moving event, I couldn't help but think about the 342,000 uninsured Minnesotans. People without insurance often cannot get the care they need, and their health outcomes are worse. Health care is a human right, and we have to ensure our state upholds that right in Minnesota.
Door knocking and volunteer lunch
My campaign hosted an incredible door knocking day. A dozen people came out in the rain and spoke with almost 200 people! We then had a delicious lunch with food from Wagon Wheel Pizza and Café.
Community Meal at Zion Evangelical Church
The room was full and this wonderful event has a positive effect on the community. Church volunteers cleared tables and maintained a clean and warm environment. I spoke with people with diverse stories and political views, but one thing tied us all together: a love for our community. The sloppy joes and desserts were delicious too! Consider attending the community meal at Zion Evangelical every Monday from 4:00-6:00pm.
Biking to Ki-Chi-Saga
Incredible volunteers organized a 16-mile bike ride from Taylor's Falls to the Vilhelm Moberg Statue in Chisago City. It was a truly perfect morning with cool temperatures and a breeze as we glided through yellow and purple wildflowers. When we arrived at the Ki-Chi-Saga Days, a swarm of hungry people in yellow shirts enjoyed food and music. It was exactly what this campaign is all about: having fun with friends and building a shared love for our common home.
Ki-Chi-Saga Parade
US Congress candidate, Trina Swanson, and State Auditor Candidate, Zack Flipovich, joined us for the parade. Between the bubbles, rainbow flags, and colorful shirts, we were beaming with enthusiasm and vigor.
Handmaids of Minnesota
The Handmaids of Minnesota is a group of women who wear uniforms that look like the Handmaid's Tale. The Handmaids wear costumes as "visual symbolism" of oppression. I asked the founders what their policy goals are at the state level, and they told me that bodily autonomy for women is their number one goal. Laws governing women's bodies are forms of oppression. Decisions about women's bodies are between them and their doctors. I will be a strong advocate for women's rights, equal rights, equal pay, and women's healthcare in the legislature.
